Mother's Day is fast approaching: it's the perfect opportunity to express our love and spoil our moms as they deserve, in recognition of all they do for us every day.
We all want to make this special day a convivial and joyful moment for our mothers. So, what better than honey to celebrate all maternal sweetness?
In this article, we will explore the origin of this celebration, the benefits of honey, and we will offer you original recipes to delight the taste buds of our dear mothers.
The origin of Mother's Day
In France, the idea of celebrating Mother's Day was launched by Napoleon Bonaparte in 1806. This initiative aimed to honor mothers of large families, particularly to boost birth rates and, indirectly, to have more soldiers. However, other priorities led the State not to follow up on this project.
Later, in 1914, Mother's Day was born in the United States thanks to Anna Jarvis, who campaigned for a day to be dedicated to living and deceased mothers, in homage to her own activist mother. In 1917, American troops, upon arriving in France, brought this tradition with them. General John J. Pershing encouraged his soldiers to write to their mothers for "Mother's Day," and special postcards were distributed on this occasion. This beautiful initiative then touched France.
Two years later, in 1920, the city of Lyon organized a ceremony in honor of mothers who had lost children during the First World War. Napoleon's initial objective of encouraging birth rates reappeared on this occasion.
In 1926, the day was formalized by the French government and supported by several associations. At that time, the "Mother's Day for large families" remained little known because it only concerned women with at least four children.
It was not until 1950 that this holiday became widespread for all mothers. From this date, it changed its name to simply "Mother's Day." Its objective evolved: it was no longer just about repopulating the country, but about honoring all mothers, without exception. A law officially set the date of this holiday for the last Sunday of May.
Honoring mothers also means offering them a little tenderness… And what if this tenderness took the form of a spoonful of honey, sweet and comforting?
Honey: a treasure of nature
Honey is much more than just a sweetener. Used for millennia, it is recognized for its antibacterial and medicinal properties. It is often recommended in winter or to relieve respiratory inflammation: a natural ally with a sweet and delicious taste.
Note also that honey has a lower glycemic index than refined sugar. It therefore appears as an ideal alternative, while offering nutrients absent from sugar, such as antioxidants, enzymes, and minerals.
As nature is well-designed, there is a wide variety of honeys, reflecting the subtle flavors of French and international regions. Monofloral or polyfloral honeys: there's something for everyone!
Surprise your mothers with chestnut honey, let them discover the exoticism of avocado honey and please them with the floral sweetness of lavender honey.
